Exam Information

Overview

The Nutritional Education Trainer Certification Exam is a 3-part exam where you will be tested on the fundamentals of nutrition and Dr. Fuhrman's preventative and therapeutic diet-styles based on superior nutrition. You must pass each part to gain access to the next part in succession. For example, in order to move on to part 2, you must first pass part 1 and so on. Parts 1 and 2 are automatically graded upon completion and you will be instantly notified of your score and whether you passed or failed along with which questions were marked wrong. Part 3 will be reviewed by NEI Faculty for final grading and you will receive notification of your score within 10 business days of submission. Practice quizzes are available to registered users.

Exam topics, reading, formats, and time limits

Part 1: The Basics

Overview: Part 1 of the exam is titled, "The Basics."  This portion of the exam will test you on the fundamental concepts of nutrition. After studying the reading materials below you will have a firm grasp on what is being taught in today's leading nutrition classes. A significant amount of time should be invested in the reading materials before attempting this part of the exam.

Required Reading:

Time Limit: 100 minutes

Format: Multiple Choice

Number of Questions: 60

Grading: Results displayed upon completion; passing score 80%

Part 2: Dr. Fuhrman's Body of Knowledge

Overview: Part 2 of the exam is titled, "Dr. Fuhrman's Body of Knowledge."  This portion of the exam will test you on informtion from all of Dr. Fuhrman's published books as well as non-published material included in the NET Handbook such as Dr. Fuhrman's Healthy Times newsletters, articles, tutorials and select scientific literature. A significant amount of time should be invested in the reading materials before attempting this part of the exam.

Time Limit: 100 minutes

Format:

  • Multiple Choice
  • Multiple Multiple Choice (one or more answers may be required if you see square checkboxes)

Number of Questions: 60

Grading: Results displayed upon completion; passing score 80%

Part 3: Client Application

Overview: Part 3 of the exam is titled, "Client Application."  This portion of the exam will test your knowledge on giving appropriate advice to clients in certain situations. The materials from the preceeding parts of the NETCE as well as the NET Handbook should be thoroughly reviewed before attempting Part 3. Part 3 will be manually graded by a NEI staff member and you will receive an email within 10 business days of completion informing you of your final grade. A grade of 85% or higher will be required to pass. There are 10 questions.

Format: Essay/Long Answer

Number of Questions: 10

Grading: Results sent electronically within 10 business days; passing score 85%

Certification Time Frame

You may take all 3 exam parts at once or pace yourself with days, weeks and months. Students have 1 year from enrollment date to pass part 3 of the NETCE. Failure to do so will result in a re-enrollment fee.  See our policies page for more information. 

You may re-take the exam as many times as necessary to receive your NET certification provided you pay the applicable retake fee.

Suggestions for Success

Knowing the answers instantaneously is helpful and will be required for many questions in order to complete the exam within the time allotted. However, it is most important to be able to know where to find the answers to questions as well, since this is an open-book format exam. Therefore, it is suggested that you have all of your reading materials readily accessible.

Find a place with no distractions, turn off your cell phone and find a clean workspace. Have your reading materials organized for quick access and get ready to ace your exam!

Checklist before you start taking an exam:

  • Quiet place or noise-canceling headphones
  • Turn your phone off
  • Reading materials nearby and easily accessible
